about

Magazines is an 8.5 minute electronic rock epic with four movements that flow from mediaeval chorale arrangements to snaky bass lines and oceanic guitars. A natural follow up to War Is On Its Way, the song is a full embrace of experimental pop composition and spontaneity, much of it recorded with first takes and then rearranged.

Magazines explores the ephemeral nature of the digital era through a literary lens, contrasting the biblical story of Mary's Annunciation with a jealous, unnamed celebrity shoved to the side. The persona moves through stages of anger ("You can't take this away from me!"), despair ("Nothing breaks except me," and ultimately finds resolution through a declaration of revenge, "I'm coming for ya!"

Hendrix achieves this evolving narrative with different voices throughout the song, from distant choruses to a rambling unhinged diatribe of mixed metaphors. Each section dances over a mixtape of 90's inspired arrangements that nod to alt-music stars of the era.

Magazines looks back and claps back without sounding retro. It rejects rejection and the fickle nature of social media's 15 seconds of fame.

lyrics

The proud have scattered imagination
Their hearts can’t have what they want
Hungry are fed, rich made poor
He’s done great things for me

They all thought it would be them
But the kings and queens fall
God promises
All call me blessed
Magnificat, Oh

You got the big break
They’ll fit you in their pockets
It feels like Friday
Saturday never comes

Throw me a dog bone
A black hole constellations
And Stand off camera
And whisper my name

I’ve got the swagger
The fence and population
Sand off the edges
And throw them in the well

I was a rising star
I was a burning flame
I was in your locket
I was in magazines

I was chemistry
But You wanted decay
The laugh of your dirty joke
I was in magazines

You can't take this away from me
You can't take this away from me
You can't take this away from me
You can't take this away!

I had the filler
I had the bone
I had the reasons
To be left alone

I was the teacher
I was the whore
I left the keeper
At the door

I wore the movies
I walked the walls
I stood beside you
In concert halls

My name on marquees
Tattooed on arms
My silhouette
A call to arms

The women hate me
The boys don’t know
The girls are asking
On video

They want the secrets
The chemistry
The atomic movements
And half life decay, half life decay
Nothing breaks, nothing breaks
Except me

The wound is where the light comes in

I was chemistry
But You wanted decay
The laugh of your dirty joke
I was in magazines

I've seen the light
I've seen the light
I've seen the light
I've seen the light
And I'm coming for ya
And I'm coming for ya
And I'm coming for ya
And I'm coming for ya
